JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE:          Engineer – Traffic Group

​

FLSA STATUS:    Exempt

 

SUMMARY:         The Engineer – Traffic Group will be responsible for performing a variety of traffic engineering assignments including completing traffic analyses and studies, developing traffic signal plans, signal timing plans, maintenance of traffic plans, pavement marking plans, and ITS plans.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrate proficiency in all traffic design concepts, software, manuals, and criteria

  • Perform travel time runs

  • Conduct field measurements of intersections and roadways

  • Prepare elements within Traffic Impact Analyses (including field work/traffic counts, projection of traffic volumes, and trip generation/distribution)

  • Responding to queries of public and other departments in a satisfactory manner

  • Performing administrative engineering duties such as issuance of permits and review of applications

  • Perform compilation of data and convert them into information and plans

  • Maintain files and supporting documentation in accordance with company policy and accepted practices

  • Develop PS&E under instruction from supervisor

  • Construction inspection or field reconnaissance as assigned

  • Performs other duties as assigned

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Civil Engineering (preferred with a Transportation focus)

  • 0-3 years of related experience

  • Familiarity of AutoCAD or MicroStation

  • Knowledge of engineering standards as well as state and local regulations a plus

  • Engineering Intern experience is a plus

  • Willingness to work in the field as requested, keeping safety as a priority

  • Illinois driver’s license

  • Ability to work independently and with a team in a fast-paced and high-volume environment with emphasis on accuracy and timeliness

  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Safety related activities are performed primarily in the field for construction projects.  For design and engineering phases of work, a standard office environment with extensive contact and frequent interruptions is to be expected.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Work may be performed in a standard office environment with extensive contact and frequent interruptions, and in the transportation infrastructure or outside in the field while performing time travel runs or field reconnaissance.

  • Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office and field setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other locations using various modes of private and commercial transportation; and to verbally communicate to exchange information

  • Vision – See in the normal visual range with or without correction

  • Hearing – Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction
