JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE:          Engineering Intern

​

FLSA STATUS:    Non-Exempt

 

SUMMARY:  TranSmart is looking for undergraduate and graduate college students pursuing engineering degrees to apply for summer internships with us in our Chicago office. Applicants should be at a sophomore level or higher in an engineering degree program focused on roadway design, drainage, traffic, electrical, or structural engineering.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare maps and plans

  • Visit sites to ensure proper installation of products

  • Respond to queries of public and other departments in a satisfactory manner

  • Perform daily duties such as issuance of permits and review of applications

  • Perform compilation of data and convert them into plans

  • Make an estimation of the cost of materials and read and interpret technical documents

  • Maintain files and supporting documentation in accordance with company policy and accepted practices

  • Construction inspection or field reconnaissance as assigned (within in the Chicagoland region)

  • Performs other duties as assigned

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Working towards a bachelor’s or graduate degree in an engineering degree program from an accredited ABET-EAC university

  • Ability to read blue prints and work independently on tasks assigned

  • Knowledge of engineering standards as well as state and local regulations a plus

  • Skilled at operating CAD systems and applications

  • Willingness to work in the field as requested, keeping safety as a priority

  • Valid Illinois driver's license, preferred

  • Ability to interact with employees and customers in a professional manner and with strong communication skills (written and verbal)

  • Detail oriented, professional attitude and reliable

  • Strong organizational and time management skills

  • Self-motivated team player with a customer service orientation

  • Ability to work independently and with a team in a fast-paced and high volume environment with emphasis on accuracy and timeliness

  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Safety related activities are performed primarily in the field for construction projects.  For design and engineering phases of safety work, a standard office environment with extensive contact and frequent interruptions is to be expected.

  • Work is performed in a standard office environment with extensive contact and frequent interruptions, and in the transportation infrastructure.

  • Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other locations using various modes of private and commercial transportation; and to verbally communicate to exchange information

  • Vision – See in the normal visual range with or without correction

  • Hearing – Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction
