JOB TITLE:          Senior Traffic Signal Operations Engineer

 

LOCATION:          Salem, Virginia

​

REPORTS TO:     Chief Multimodal Transportation Engineer and Client

 

FLSA STATUS:    Exempt, Part-Time or Full-Time

​

JOB FLEXIBILITY is negotiable - from retired and wanting to work 20 hours per week, to full-time working remotely up to 3 days per week.

SUMMARY:         The Senior Traffic Signal Operations Engineer is a great opportunity to use technology and intelligent transportation systems to monitor, operate, and maintain traffic control devices. This position will be a direct report to the Chief Multimodal Transportation Engineer from TranSmart Technologies (TranSmart). Their daily report will be to the Prime Regional Operations Manager, with direct multi-agency communications.  

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop PS&E packages of traffic and pedestrian signals.

  • Assist in the development of coordinated traffic signal timing plans, development of timing databases, and conducting before and after studies.

  • Mentor and train staff on traffic signal design and timing using Synchro and VISSIM.

  • Assist with getting ASTPM platform configured.

  • Responsible for monitoring traffic signal systems through KITS.

  • Set-up and maintain Transportation Signal System Central Software and Performance Metrics.

  • Supervise collection of traffic data, including intersection lane measurements, grades and signal phasing.

  • Work with staff to troubleshoot traffic signals, active traffic management systems, computer network, or traffic surveillance camera malfunctions.

  • Support traffic and intelligent transportation systems (ITS) engineering studies.

  • Work cooperatively with agency staff, contractors, and other consultants.

  • Implement signal timing plans and signal timing changes.

  • Other ad-hoc initiatives as assigned by the Project Management Team.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:​

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering with a Professional Engineering License, specializing in transportation

  • Traffic Signal Design and Timing experience 5+ years

  • Proficiency in the ASTPM platform.

  • Synchro and VISSIM competency are required.

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local construction regulations and codes applicable to traffic signal design and construction.

  • Experience mentoring staff a plus.

  • Virginia State Driver’s License in good standing.

  • Geographic familiarity with regional freeway system and arterial roads.

  • Familiarity with and interest in implementation and maintenance of traffic signals and timings.

  • Travel within region of responsibility.

  • Flexibility and willingness to work outside of regular business hours and in the field (position works with other staff that are a 24/7/365 operation).

  • Ability to work independently and with a team in a fast-paced and high-volume environment with emphasis on accuracy and timeliness.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:  Safety related activities are performed primarily in the field. For design and engineering phases of safety work, a standard office environment with extensive contact and frequent interruptions is to be expected.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Work is performed in a standard office environment and in the field.

  • Daily works tasks require walking and working outside on uneven concrete or asphalt surfaces, construction worksites, public streets, and city parkways.

  • May occasionally crawl, reach above shoulder level, and carry equipment; frequently balance, bend/stoop, kneel, crouch, squat, sit, stand, finger/enter data/keystroke, feel, smell, and perform repetitive motions; and continuously climb steps, walk, push/pull, lift, carry, talk, hear, and drive.

  • Use right hand and left hand for simple handling or grasping, firm handling or grasping, and fine handling or manipulation.

  • Use right foot and left foot for repetitive motions.

  • The employee is expected to lift up to 20 pounds occasionally.

  • Vision – See in the normal visual range with or without correction.

  • Hearing – Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
